The second one is the Militia Hill Golf Course, which was designed by Dana Fry and Dr. Michael Hurdzan in 2002, being an 18 hole championship course adjacent to the Wissahickon and overlooking an area which was a battleground in the Revolutionary War, hence its name. The Militia Hill Golf Course was host for Philadelphia Section PGA championship in 2003 and 2004 and for the 2004 Philadelphia Amateur Championship. This baby was designed to complement the Wissahickon, not to clash/compete with it, being ranked by Golf Digest as the 22nd best course in Pennsylvania. Last but not least, theres the St. Martins Golf Course, built way back in 1895 and wearing the signature of architect Willie Tucker. Originally a 9 hole design, the St. Martins Golf Course was expanded to an 18 hole regulation 2 years later, in 1897. The golf course is now known as Martins and it was the host for the 1907 and 1910 US Open championship, and it plays currently as a very pleasant nine hole layout. The Philadelphia Cricket Club also provides a practice facility for its visitors, featuring a two tiered ranged, including a short game area, an indoor instruction area, an irons only area and plenty of grass hitting stations, which are available for its members from dusk till dawn.

2. Pikewood National Golf Club Course Review

The design and the layout of the course are inspired from the works of preeminent architects, the likes of Alister MacKenzie and Donald Ross. Also, playing the Pikewood National means that youre interested in pure golf, with no tee times and no houses. The golf course is built in perfect harmony with nature, being serene and beautiful and also unspoiled by either residential nor commercial development. Playing the Pikewood National is like walking undisturbed through nature, enjoying the majestic forests, dramatic views and the spectacular mountains which are visible from any direction. The golf course is designed to fit the land perfectly and it boasts its unique natural look but keep in mind that the Pikewood National is a private golf club, available just for its members and their guests.

3. Pinehurst No. 2 Golf Club Course Review

In 2010 Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaws design firm started a massive restoration job, reviving the natural and strategic features of the Pinehurst No. 2. This was a large scale project, including the removal of thirty five acres of turf, together with the reintroduction of native wire grasses, hardpan and natural bunker edges. If youre going to play the Pinehurst No. 2 today, youll be in for a real treat, as the course plays exactly the same as its creator originally envisioned more than one hundred years ago. Being at the heart of Pinehurst, the No. 2 golf course continues to bedevil and enthrall in equal measure, being Americas first golf resort and arguably one of the best, if not the best in the world. If youre a true golf aficionado, playing the Pinehurst No. 2 must be high on your bucket list and you should know that your life will never be complete until youll make this journey, i.e. golfing at Pinehurst.

4. Pinewood Country Club Course Review

When stepping onto the first tee, you will be greeted with a fairly short dog-leg left, but keep your tee ball to the right side and you will have no issues starting the round on a high note. Take advantage of the short first, because the 2nd hole is much longer and is tree lined from tee to green. You need to take driver, but if you can keep it to the right, you will be able to scramble to victory. The par 5 3rd hole is not too long, but beware, there is a pond located in front of the green that does defend against reaching the par 5 in two. The rest of the front 9 is fairly straight forward, and the defense is lacking until you reach the par 3 8th hole, which is surrounded by water. The miss is long and left, but you have ample room beyond the green. The back nine is fairly simple, and you will be able to reach both par 5s in two shots. Both are located late in the round (at 16 and 18), and aside from the creek in front of the 16th tee, there is nothing really defending these two reach able par 5s. If you care able to find the fairway off of the tee, you will leave yourself with a great opportunity to close out the round in style. In all, I would not pass up on a trip to Pinewood. The course conditions are pristine, the layout is quite modern, and the scoring is clearly there.

5. Pittsburgh Field Club Course Review

The Pittsburgh Field features 6611 yards from its longest tees for a 71 par and it has a course rating of 72,9 and a slope rating of 134. Metrics aside, playing the Pittsburgh Field will make for a once in a life time experience, as the golf course offers its visitors terrific views and its challenging for golfers at every skill level, boasting its impeccably maintained fairways and greens. During its long and tumultuous history, the Pittsburgh Field Club Golf Course suffered lots of renovation jobs and many famous architects put their signature upon its layout, names like Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones Sr., or A.W. Tillinghast. Keep in mind that what youll be dealing with here is a private resort, available for its members and their guests only, but if youre lucky enough to get a chance to play it, dont hesitate, I promise you wont regret it. Every hole is unique and has its own character and the course gets better and better every time you visit.

6. Plainfield Country Club Course Review

Obviously, the Plainfield Country Club is a private golfing facility, available just for its members and their guests, so keep that in mind before planning your trip. Over the decades, the Plainfield Country Club was the proud host of 2 major US National Championships. In 1978, the Club hosted the US Amateur and in 1987 the US Womens Open; afterwards, in 2011 and 2015, it was home for Barclays, not to mention numerous Regional and State championships. Currently the Plainfield Country Club is ranked as no. 24 on Golfweeks bucket list sort to speak of Americas Greatest Classic courses, 50th in the US by Golf Magazine and 65th in the country by Golf Digest in their famous roaster of Americas 100 Greatest Golf Courses.

7. Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Course Review

Playing the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club youll be flabbergasted by the beautiful natural surroundings, as the golf courses are built upon meandering lagoons, crossing through undulating fairways and their elevated Bermuda grass green are beautifully and strategically protected by steep faced bunkers. Also, from time to time, youll notice that the prevailing sea breeze will put your game to the test, making for a challenging golfing experience regardless of your skill level. Playing the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club youll have to go through all the 14 clubs in your golf bag. The Ocean course was designed by the famous British architect Herbert Bertram in 1928 and it features 6811 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 72 par, making for the regions first golf resort experience. The Lagoon course features 6022 yards of golf from its longest tees for a 70 par and its a masterpiece of golf design, being co-authored by 2 of the best architects in the 20th century, Robert Trent Jones and Joe Lee. Both courses were restored recently by Bobby Weed, in 1998 and 2007 respectively.

8. Poppy Hills Golf Course Review

The design of the golf course was also tweaked, as in improved, by removing the mounding which was all the rage back in the eighties when the course was initially built (1986 to be more precise) and now the trees are cleared, opening lines of play. The restoration included redoing all the greens and the bunkers and after the upgrade, the Poppy Hills Golf Course can be safely described as Poppy 2.0. Everything has changed for the better, the fairways are now much wider and the bunker patterns are now more strategic than ever. 9. Portland Golf Club Course Review

The first 9 holes of the Portland Golf Club were built upon a previous farmland and the course was expanded to its current 18 hole design in 1918. Today, the routing is basically the same as the original golf course, with the exception of one of the greens. Playing the Portland Golf Club makes for both a physical and psychological challenge due to the gigantic trees which are lining the fairways, along with the smart hole designs which are using the hilly terrain, demanding strategy and placement from the player.
