If you are struggling with that hook shot a big possibility is that your hands are getting very overactive. Now what I mean by that is, as you’re coming through the ball, the hands could be flipping over, they could be taking much control away from the body to the club head, and actually getting that club face more close than it needs to be. If you’re looking to have neutralized club face position, using the bigger muscle and using the body, using more rotation can be a big advantage. Now what this will do, if you get your club position set into a good position where I’ll take the backswing. If you then control this through swing motion with the bigger muscles, with body rotations it can help make you a much more consistent player. Now what I mean by that a great drill that you use to see if this is going to be the case for you, is if you get set up just a shorter iron I’ve got a 7-Iron here but you can use pretty much anything down to a wedge. Getting yourself set up, taking the club away to pretty much the halfway stage or where the club head here is in front of the hands of this halfway stage.
As I move down to the ball, what I going to do is I’m just going to move my body left. So I’m going to transfer my weight left and then I’m going to turn my hips, rotate my upper body. And I’m going to try actively keep my out of the shot. I’m going to try and keep my hands relaxed. I’m not going to grip on very, very tightly but I’m just going to focus on moving my through. Now what that will allow me to do is take control away from my hands, take control away from them affecting the club head and use my body more effectively. So I’m just going to take it to halfway back and then focus on turning the body a little bit more through rather than using the hands, so halfway back but then turning the body though. And why I’ve been able to do that is hit a very, very straight ball flight just by focusing on rotating the body more. So if you’re struggling with that hook shot, try and relax those hands, take the sensation away from them, and use your body rotations more. Use that very simple drill, and hopefully you should be able to hit a few more straighter shots.
