When you’re struggling to commit to iron shots, one thing which could be out of sync with the rest of the swing is the tempo of the technique. A lot of players when they are moving down into impact will actively feel even though they don’t seem to have a conscious control that they are slowing down through impact. Now obviously as you move in the golf course through the point of impact, you want to be increasing the amount of club head speed. Now if you are also going with commitment this can seem like a very, very hard thing to do, but if you focus on tempo and the rhythm of your swing, you can make it a little bit easier.
Now the first key to this is to make sure that you are accelerating your swing past the ball by much further than you would imagine. As you swing down and hit the shot, the fastest point of your swing is about this point just after impact as the arms fully straighten out and the swing just starts to reach an upward angle in its swing arc.
But what I want you to do to improve your rhythm and hopefully improve your commitment, is to feel while your swing, your speed open and accelerating at about this point here. So after the arms have passed the half way stage and the club is just past parallel to the ground. Now what they should allow to do is have a lot more time from the top of the swing moving down through the ball slowly accelerating up to this point here. So it’s going through and then accelerating through the point of impact. What normally happens is the club head speed picks up around the point of impact, as the player is forced into this position.
If you are struggling with this, try and use this tempo drill and it could help you with that speeding up of the swing as you come down into the point of impact. So slow down and then keep that acceleration up as you move through the ball and try and make the fastest point of your swing up and around that point there.
