What Elements Are Needed For A Sweeping Golf Swing (Video) - by Peter Finch

So let's have a look at some of the elements that you actually need to perform a sweeping golf swing. Now I'm going to use my eight iron here for example but this holds truth throughout the rest of the bags you just need to alter ball position and chest position. I'll discuss that a little bit anyway but the elements that you want to be seeing so I'm going to move this ball just into position here just ahead of this alignment stick. Now please do not hit shots like this, this is purely for demonstration purposes. So as I get settled to this eight iron here, ball position in the middle of my stunt, you can see here the top of the alignment stick is pretty much right above the middle of my chest. Now that’s my swig center because as my club moves around my body, it's going to be bossoming out pretty much at the ball and then maybe after the ball if I'm striking down.

Now to perform a sweeping motion, what I want to be seeing is getting myself set up, getting my chest pretty much over the ball, taking it back and then as I come through impact what I want to be seeing is the shaft angle actually matching as close as possible to what this alignment stick is doing here as well. If I actually move my hands back at this I'll be actually hitting hoop on the ball adding loft to maybe catch in a little bit far. If I move a long way ahead, I'm going to be striking the ball first and then the turf and hitting down. So to execute that sweeping motion, you need to be trying to get that club shaft pretty much level and pointing up at your swing center as you hit. Now what that is going to do, it's going to create a condition where you're hitting the ball and then just maybe the turf afterwards, it's almost a bruising of the turf after the ball. It's going to increase the amount of loft that you're having as opposed to when you're striking down on the shots giving you an initial high starting point and actually hitting a higher launch angle as well and a higher peak height of the shots. Now as you actually move on to the longer clubs, you'll be doing this naturally already. If I move on to say a dry versetto pair where my ball position is just slightly further forward, you can see my swing center here is behind the shot. Now if I just maintain that position and you imagine this ball being teed up, I'm going to be striking the ball and then moving my club up through impact. And this is what is known as an ascending angle of attack and this is one of the key benefits to having a sweeping swing and one of the key elements you need to be looking out for. So there are some drawbacks but if you're looking to incorporate a little bit of a sweeping motion you're looking to try and maybe move away from a very steep angle attack. This is the kind of the elements that you need to be applying to your game. A great drill to use and a very, very simple drill to use for this as well is just to get small tee pack, tee the ball up very slightly so it's kind of raised off the ground, maybe a little bit taller than you would normally use. And actually practice swinging keeping that swing center over the ball and just try to really clip the ball away off the top of the tee without taking a diver. If you can do that you'll that your angle of attack is a little bit shallower, it's actually sending and it's not striking the ball first and then the turf.
