Why is ball striking so important in golf? Now, ball striking, oh golf is about ball striking really. Everything we do in the swing to get the club in the right position is all about striking the ball in the right place because without that we can’t hit the pretty little golf shots we like to hit. And I think after every golf shot you ever hit probably the first bit of feedback you get before you even look up and see where that ball has gone, is you get the feedback on the ball strike. That's either a sound or a feeling. The sound of whether you hit the ball cleanly, whether you hit the ground, where about the ball hit on the club face. And then you get the feeling, either it doesn’t feel like anything and you have hit the ball right in the center of the club and you barely feel the impact. Or whether you get that vibration coming right up through the shaft and the fingers start to rattle when you haven't struck the ball very well. So that instant feedback of the sound and the feeling. That's the ball strike that you're feeling right there. Now the ball strike is very important to us in terms of where the golf ball goes, because hitting the ball in inconsistent places over the club face, not only affects the direction but it also massively affects the distance.
Recent research, TrackMan [Inaudible] [0:01:17] that sort of information, can now show us that if you strike the ball an inch away from the center it can have upto a 20% difference in how far the ball flies. So middle strike might go 250 yards down the middle of the fairway and you say you had a beautiful tee shot. You strike it one inch away, which is less than the width of a golf ball, one inch away from the center. That can affect the golf ball by upto 50 yards, 20% of its flight, 50 yards less. So you’re now you down there on the fairway hitting five clubs more into the greens, you are hitting four irons instead of a short iron, a nine or a wedge, purely because you missed the middle by an inch. So you could have the fastest swing in the world and you've got a great club head path travelling in, you got the face angle really nicely lined up. You're expecting to see the ball travel down that 250 leave your wedge on to the green. You missed the middle by an inch and you've got a four iron into the green and potentially not from the middle of the fairway because hitting the toe and hitting heel can also affect the direction of the shot. So that's why ball striking is so important to us. We have to get the middle of a club, striking the middle of the golf ball to play good consistent golf.
