Should my hands be in front of the ball at impact? With the irons and with the wedges, you definitely want to see the shaft leaning slightly towards the target at the point of impact. The hip should be rotating and turning, the body weight should be moving over to your front foot, and the hands should be just ahead of the ball like this. What will actually if you get into this position is the ball will be contacted first and then the tuff afterwards. A slightly descending blow, great control over the ball, fantastic amounts of spin, and actually more consistent golf shot.

Now a great way to actually practice this and to preset this is to get yourself in a position where you are ready to hit the ball and then just move the hand slightly ahead at address, swing back, and just try and return to the same position. If you can do that you are going to get a lovely descending blow onto the ball, produce a nice divot, and also produce very nice golf shots. The only difference is when you get to the driver because with the driver if the hands get ahead of the ball you will be striking down, it will cause a skied shot, and some other nasty shots that we don’t want to be seen. At the point of impact with a driver you want the hands to be pretty much level or even slightly behind if you’re really trying to launch it off up into the air. So the difference with the high ends so the driver can be actually dictated and can be changed simply by the ball position of the driver being much further forward in the stance. If you wanted to hit a massively high high end shot as well you can try and get the hands level or slightly behind at impact and that will launch the ball straight up in the air. But in general terms with the high ends you want the hands to be slightly ahead and you can set those at address. With the driver you are the hands on level with or slightly behind at impact. If you can manipulate the hand position, you will be able to manipulate the ball flights and you will be able to hit much better golf shots.
