Why do golfers thin the golf ball? Now a thin shot occurs when the leading edge of the club catches the ball in the equator just below. As it catches the equator or just below, it still produces enough backspin to actually lift the ball up into the air but it goes very, very low. There’s no launch on the ball, there’s not much control over the ball, and if you do hit a thin into a green there’s not much chance of it stopping where you want it too. Now there’s a couple of reasons that you can hit a thin a shot. Mostly as you come down the weight stays on the right side and the angle built up in the backswing between the wrist and the club actually begins to be lost, you straighten out the wrist and the club too early, the club bottoms out and it’s out to early, and actually begins to rise up as it approaches the ball. It causes thin shots and it also causes top shots as well.
Another reason why you might be thinning the ball is coming through the impact retracting the arms upwards towards the body. What this effectively does it brings the club from a decent position at impacts as the arms retract upwards it actually raises the level of the club and just gets that leading edge hitting the middle of the ball. Now there’s a couple of ways you can do – you can actually practice stopping this thin shot. First of all you can practice just keeping the angle in between the wrist and the club coming down something that might you refer as lag angle is keeping this angle in as you are come into impact. But probably the most kind of important position and the one you really want to be practicing and as you are coming through impact you make sure those arms are extending and the club is pointing down towards the ball.
A better way to practice this is just to have a little half shots swinging it back halfway into impact and trying to get those arms extended down towards the target. It’s very hard to hit a thin shot if you can get into this position here. With the arms extended pointing down towards the target and if you can combine it with a little kind of a wrist hinge down near to the ball, you are going to hit very, very consistent shots and hopefully that uncontrollable thin will become a bit of a thing of the past.
