What is the first part of my body to move during the golf back swing? Now the golf backswing and the through swing for that matter is made up of something called the kinetic sequence so the different movements of different parts of the body all working in sequence to produce the very best golf shot possible. Now in the golf back swing the first, very first swing to move should be the club head which is then operated obviously by the hands. And then after the hands is the arms, after the arms it’s the shoulders, after the shoulders it’s the body, the torso, the stomach and then after that the hips a little bit and then finally just a little bit of movement with that actual lower body.

And in the through swing, that sequence is reversed; so it’s the feet and the lower body to move first, then it’s the hips, then it’s the torso, then it’s the shoulders, then it’s the arms and the very last thing to come through are the hands and the club. And if you can get that sequence working in order, that’s the best way to produce good golf shots, it’s almost a bit of a mirror image of your back swing when you actually get to your through swing. So when you’re standing over that ball, the club head moves first, then it’s the hands and the arms, the shoulders begin to rotate, the core also begins to turn, the hips open slightly, the knees brace and the feet become just a little bit active. During the down swing, the hips begin to turn after the feet get involved, the core and the torso begin to come into play, the shoulders rotate, dragging the arms and finally dragging the club into impact. And then through the ball everything just carries on in that sequence extending throughout the shot. If you get it moving in that order and get it moving in that sequence, then things start to become a lot easier. What I’d recommend is probably doing that kind of sequence and working on that back swing order as it were and then using the hands to move first, just in a very slow motion swings. So don’t rush it to begin with, just take the club away nice and slowly, and get the hands and then the arms and the shoulders and get that sequence moving in order. One thing a lot of people do is they focus too much say on a shoulder turn or a hip, kind of a restriction on the back swing. If you can focus on keeping that order of the hands and then the arms and et cetera moving in a correct sequence, the consistency of your golf shots is bound to rise so give it a go, get the hands moving first, and then let everything else flow from that.
