Should I Try To Fight The Wind Or Adapt? (Video) - by Natalie Adams

Should I try and fight the wind or adapt when I’m choosing my golf shot? Whenever you’re playing in windy conditions, nature is always going to win. The wind you can’t fight it you’ve got to play with it. So the best thing to do when you are at in the wind is adapt. Try and keep the ball under the wind as much as possible so it has less influence over the direction the ball is flying in and the distance it’s also flying. So if you’re playing down wind, you want to get the ball higher into the air and let the wind help blow you down the hole it will make the hole a lot shorter but if you’re playing into the wind you’ve got to keep the ball low, hit it under the wind get the ball running along the floor more to make sure you keep the distance on your golf shots.

So here’s how to hit high shots and how to hit low shots. If we’re looking to hit a high shot, we want to play the ball from slightly further forward in our stance so that we just catch it on the upswing and also with slightly more loft on the golf club. We want to set our feet shoulder width apart so we’ve got a nice firm base and then we want to set our hands so that the over the golf ball and so the shaft is perpendicular to the floor. A good tip here is get the shaft pointing at your belly button that will jus allow the club face to sit back a little bit more and just put slightly more loft onto that club face for you to hit the shot with and you’ll get the ball up a little bit higher, so if you’re playing down wind get the ball up into the air and let the wind blow the ball further down the hole for you. If you’re playing into the wind though we want a low trajectory shot so to create that we do the opposite. We play the ball slightly further back in the stance and usual just so that you catch the ball on the downswing and that will have the club slightly more de-lofted so you’ll get a lower trajectory and we want to set the clubs so the hands are forward and the club is leaning toward the shaft of the club is leaning towards the target. So set the club if you’re a right handed golfer so that your left arm and the club are creating a really straight line. If you do this you’re going to swing back and as you come back into the shot, bring the club back into this position with the shaft leaning forward and you’ll hit a much lower trajectory golf shot. So if you adapt how you play rather than trying to fight the wind, you’ll find that it’s much easier to score when out in the golf course.
