A chip and run is a really effective shot to play when you find yourself in a position close to the green. The shot is played so the ball rolls along the green more than it is in the air. It is usually played with a 7 iron but you can also play the same shot with a hybrid for really effective results as well.
Playing the shot with a 7 iron, the shot will travel 25% in the air and then roll 75% along the green. To achieve this, set up aiming the club face at where you want to land the golf ball. Set your feet up less than shoulder width apart and the ball in the middle of your stance. Draw you left foot back (for right handed golfers) about four inches to help you rotate through the shot and swing the club head along the target line.
Hold the golf club lower down on the handle than you usually would. Doing this reduces the distance between your hands and the club head and this will result in you having more control over the club head when you play the golf shot. Place more weight on your left side and play the shot with your hands forward of the club head, as this will help you to achieve a good connection on the ball with the club head.
Playing the shot with your hands ahead simply means you need to keep your hands on the left of the club head and to achieve this you want to work on creating a straight line from your left shoulder down your left arm to your hands and then down the club shaft to the club head. Work on swinging this straight line away from the ball and then swing it back towards the ball and through the strike into the follow through – maintaining the straight line from your left shoulder down your left arm and then down the club shaft and into the club head. However far you swing the club head to the right of the golf ball on your backswing, you need to return it back to the ball and then swing it an equal distance to the left of the ball. As you swing the club head through the golf ball, allow your hips and torso to rotate towards the target and swing the club head along the target line with the club aiming at the target. Gently brush the grass under the golf ball with the club head and the ball will pop up due to the loft on the club head.
This will get you playing a really consistent chip and run around the green and will help you to become much more accurate, which will help you to lower your scores.
