If we look at one almost unique golf swings on the tour now, we’re going to analyze this in a little bit of detail. So we’ve got Jim Furyk, most people would recognize Jim Furyk, very experienced golf amateur, very experienced Ryder Cup player, and a Major winner. But a lot of people would recognize him from his unique golf swing. You might say you’ll recognize him from five holes around the golf course, just by seeing the way he swings the golf club. But here’s a question for you, what was Jim Furyk’s father’s job? So a lot of people would say well, maybe a lumberjack, maybe a butcher. His dad was actually a golf professional. Now if that’s not a bad advert for his dad’s golf teaching, I don’t know what isn’t.
So if he was my son and he was swinging it like this, I can’t tell you the amount of changes I’d want to make, and then I’m fearful because I think, I could have ruined that guy, I could have ruined Jim Furyk’s career. More importantly Jim Furyk won $45million over his career. I could have ruined $45million that’s my retirement pot. His dad’s living quite happily on the beach somewhere in Malibu, because he was a golf professional and said, I am going to let my son swing the golf club how he wants, and I would have been guilty of ruining that beautiful golf swing. When we look at the way Furyk swings the golf club, we really need to start by looking down the line. He sets up to the golf ball in his very unorthodox position, incredibly close to the ball.
He got his hands almost perched in between his knees, there’s only way to go from there, he has to lift the golf club up outside the line; he simply can’t take the golf club in behind him. He has to take the golf club out. The golf club shaft thing gets vertical in the backswing, this scares me and now this thing should be here pointing at the golf poll, all the teaching fairies is that that’s the way it’s going to come down, but now Furyk’s out. He’s going to cross the line and then it happens, this golf club just falls in a big loop behind him.
It comes way back on the inside and then it gets to this position. And this is where as a golf professional, and claiming his dad as well, get to there and thinks, that boy is going to be able to play you know, because from that position into the ball, Jim Furyk is as good as you will see. He manages to bring the club down in a really good position. He has to be incredibly fast with his hips. His hips and his legs jump out of the way because don’t forget when he started, he was too close so he needs to create the space, now he jumps out the way, and he gets that golf club from there to there and through to the same height only on the side as good as anybody.
The club face comes through nicely, squares up, is delivered down the target line, then his legs go again and he dives into the ball with his legs. So a very unorthodox looking golf swing, you wouldn’t really want to copy it. But then you look at the results, the $45million, the Major Championships, the Ryder Cups, and the fact that from here through to here through to here, he hits the ball beautifully nice straight more often than not. So what do I know, his dad clearly saw something in his golf swing, and he thought you know what I’m going to let the boy to play with that, and I think his dad’s got a nice little pension for him to retire on.
