Now we should all be aware that the building blocks of a golf swing are numerous, we have lots of different areas that we have to work on and we class those as building blocks that go together to actually form a nice golf swing. One of the key building blocks I want to talk to you about now is going to be the weight shift that you have during the swing. Now we should be aware that when we setup the golf ball, we have our weight in one position, during the swing, the bodyweight may move around and then in the follow through of the swing, the bodyweight should definitely move around and it will be in a completely different position to where it started. So, clearly the bodyweight is moving, so we need to make sure you understand how it moves, when it moves and what it should look like.
So, in this next little miniseries of videos I am going to be explain in great depth, how the bodyweight will move. One of the key principles is that when you setup to the golf ball its in one place, and as you start moving the bodyweight is going to try and shift. So, you have got to work really hard in that first sort of one or two feet of the backswing to make sure we can control the bodyweight. The bodyweight doesn’t just follow where the golf club goes, otherwise the golf swing would look like a very big sway. So, we work quite hard as golfers, to actually stay in one set position.
When you watch a really good player playing and you watch Tiger when he was playing back at his best. He was working incredibly hard to make something look incredibly simple. You would see him play golf and you think, well that’s look easy, it doesn’t really seem to do much, he doesn’t seem to move much. But he is working really hard to control his weight shift. So, in a good address position; we are nicely balanced about 50-50 when we have got a mid iron in this setup. And if I just let my bodyweight follow the club, I would sway back this way and I would say through this way. Now you might say, well, that looks like me or that looks like my mate when he plays golf. If you watch a Tiger swing from back in the day, he would have worked really hard to not move his bodyweight apart from in the positions he wanted to move it.
So, bodyweight shift should happen, but you should be in control of it rather than the golf club being in control of it. So, let’s explain that a little bit more in depth through these next four videos.
