What is a chili dip golf shot and should I avoid it? A chili dip golf shot is just a miss hit or miss stroke golf shot, and it’s one that occurs when you hit the ground before you’ve hit the ball. The result of this is as the club head drives into the ground all the speed of the club head is transferred into the ground rather than into the ball. And by the time you're hitting the ball the ball just doesn’t travel very far at all, sometimes only a few yards. So it's not a great golf shot to have, it's not a great miss hit because it doesn’t give you a good result and you don’t move the ball very far down the hole.

So how to avoid it we need to start striking the ball and then the ground rather than striking the ground and then the ball. So here's a great tip to help you crisp out the connection and make sure you strike the ball first. If you're hitting a chili dip you're in a setup position and as you're swinging in the low point for the golf club is too early, it's too much before the ball on the right hand side if you're a right handed golfer. So what we need to do is move this low point for the golf swing of the low point on the swing arc and we need to get it to where the ball is so that you strike the ball first or even just get the low point just left of that golf ball. So the easiest way for us to do that is to block this area here and we can do that quite simply by just popping a head cover into that position there. So if you're lowering the club too early if you're leaning back and getting the low point for the club head on the right hand side of the ball you going to strike that head cover now rather than strike the ball. So that will give you the information that you need. So what I would do is set that head cover just opposite your right foot initially or the outside of your right foot. Just hover the club before you actually make your back swing because you don’t want to hit that head cover on your back swing. It's there for information on your down swing. So hold the club head up, swing back and then work on swinging back down so you strike the ground after the head cover. If you strike the ground too early you'll just hit the head cover. Once you’ve got – so that you’ve got about a foot away from the ball so if you need to start it over here, start it over there and then just gradually move the head cover towards the ball until you’ve got it about a foot away from the ball and then what we want to do now is we'll reintroduce that golf ball but initially just make some slow swings, start to get a feel for how to get the club head to drop down to where the ball is rather than early but once you’ve done that you'll start to be able to hit some great golf shots where you strike the ball first. So hover the golf club, swing it back, and then hit down, you'll hit a great golf shot and you won't hit the head cover. And that will make sure that you stop hitting that chili dip where you hit the ground first and you'll really improve the shots when you're out on the golf course.
