What should my right palm do during a bunker shot? The main thing that your right palm should be doing during a bunker shot if you’re looking to generate height which a bunker shot is all about, is keeping your right palm so that it feels like it’s facing up to the sky. If you’re holding the club correctly and you keep your right palm up towards the sky as you swing back and then keep it up to the sky as you swing down through the ball and though the shots then your right palm will be in a position where it can control the club face and the club face will be open really have a lot of loft on, and you’ll hit a very high shot. So really a right palm is reflecting what is happening in the club face. If the right palm rotates over, the club face is also rotating over and you’re de-lofting the club, you’re not going to hit as high a golf shot.

So let’s have a look at how to set up and then the feeling we want to have in that right hand and a great little tip to help you with that. To hit you a bunker shot; initially open the club face, so just turn the club face to the right, slightly then put your hands on. You’ve now got to rotate the club face so that it aims at the target so turn your body to the left until the club face is pointing back at the target. Set your feet shoulder width apart and really wriggle your feet into the sand; it will help you get a really firm base that will lower you into the sand, so you can slide the club under the ball through the sand. And it will give you a feel for the texture so you’ll know the type of force you’re going to have to play the shot with because it will give you a feel for what the sands like. So as we swing back you’re right palm, you’ll be hinging your wrist but you’ll be rotating your right palm into a palm upwards up to the sky position. As you swing back through, we want to keep the right palm up to the sky and that really allows you to slide the club face under the ball so the club face is also up to the sky; it will give you a very vertical, very high shot from the sand. And as you turn your body into the finish position; again keep your right hand under the handle keep your right palm skywards. A great tip to help you do that would be when you’re in the bunker just play the shot without the ball, just swing back, as you swing back down into the sand just work on scooping the sand up onto the club face and just carry the sand on the club face rather than rotating your hand over and dumping the sand off. So keep the sand on the club face, once you got a feel for that and you can feel what you’re right palm needs to do then re-introduce the ball with the action of keeping your right palm up to the sky throughout the shot; get you hitting some really high bunker shots and you’ll start to reduce your scores.
