Now no 3-putt can ever be considered to be a good 3-putt, but there are some 3-putts that are worse than others. And leaving your comeback putt short of the hole could often be considered the worst, the most frustrating, the most annoying 3-putt. So here is my first putt, I'm rolling it down towards the hole, I get a bit too aggressive with this one and I hit it too far past the hole. It just runs past the lip and it runs maybe four foot past. But because I've hit that one too hard, and then I'm very scared of the comeback putt and the classic miss is on hitting this comeback putt back towards the hole and leaving it just short of that lip.

And that's a real frustrating 3-putt. We got too aggressive on this one and then too defensive on that one. And think about the logic of that, that's the wrong way round. Really we should be more defensive on the longer putt and then more aggressive and more assertive on the shorter putts. But it's this thing of well have hit the first one too hard, well I definitely don’t want to make that mistake again and then you leave the comeback putt short. So what I would suggest is, firstly take notice of the speed of your longer putts and make sure you're not being too aggressive. But then if you have gone past the hole, be really positive with your comeback putt. Aim for a point maybe a foot and half beyond the hole so that you try and hit your comeback putt back on this side trying to get it up to this point here. Be a lot more positive and really be quite assertive with knocking that comeback putt in with a great deal of confidence. And hopefully that will encourage more 2-putts and less 3-putts, particularly avoiding the really frustrating missing the comeback putt shot 3-putt.
