What The Feet Do During The Golf Swing (Video) - by Peter Finch

One of the most key concepts to understand within the golf swing is that all your power is drawn from the ground upwards and your only connection to the ground are your feet. So you need to make sure that within the golf swing, your feet are doing the correct things. It’s something that a lot of people overlook, it’s something that a lot of people do not focus on, they just simply stand on their feet and then forget about them. The weight transfer you use through your feet is exceptionally important. The position that you put your feet in at address is exceptionally important.

All these things will help improve the overall consistency of your golf swing. Now, when you are getting your feet placed into their positions, I'm using this right foot here, but you can kind of vary this around depending on the type of shot you are doing when the ball position is concerned. By getting the feet set up, you want to pretty much shoulder with the power for most iron shots, slightly outside moving on to the wood shot. But during the golf swing, the weight will be transferring onto the right-hand side, onto the right knee and the way to do that is to feel that the weight is transferring through the right foot. A nice way to think about this is as you move on the backswing, the head is staying nice and steady, but you can feel your weight pressing more down into the right heel. As you move through the point of impact, the weight travels left in between the feet until the point of impact, that weight is now more focused onto the left heel. Just by simply using that thought process by thinking about what you are doing with your feet, you can really help shift your weight successfully through the entire technique and that’s why it’s so important because without weight shift, you are not going to be able to produce some of the best shots that you can. So focusing on the feet, getting them in a good position and then transferring the weight correctly in between them should allow you to get off to a very good start when hitting solid golf shots.
