A fantastic swing position that you can adopt to try and eke out a few more extra yards and to really add a little bit more of a whiplash effect to your backswing and downswing sequence is to start the downswing before you complete the backswing. Now what I mean by this, this is something that Padraig Harrington did for a number of years during his most successful time when he was winning majors. Is as he turned up to the top of the backswing, before his shoulders reached their full range of motion, he’d already started to move his lower body towards the target.

Now normally in a golf swing as you turn away there will be a point at the top of the swing where everything just stops, it doesn’t really move much at all. But what Harrington did under the guidance of Bob Torrance was as he was turning away to the top of his swing, if he moved those hips to the left and he started to rotate them to the left, the amount of stretch between his upper and body – upper and lower body was increased. And what he found by that is he was able to whip through the point of impact much, much faster and it gave him a real burst of power. So you can use some practice swings to try this, turning up to the top of the swing and before you’re fully rotated, just getting those hips moving left and then rotating up to the top and then before you quite reach that point, give that lower half movement. It’s quite a difficult one to get, it’s quite a complex movement to actually get correct and to feel like you are in control of the whole motion. But if you do manage to feel comfortable with it, it can really give a big boost of speed. I’m going to get set up, I’m going to give this a go. Tried this a few times and it does work on occasion for me. So a big backswing, start the downswing before I finished it, I could feel that extra bit of oomph, that little bit of extra power through the shot. Slightly hilly, it’s a bit annoying, if I would have called that out in the middle that would have gone a long way. So give that a go and see how you get it.
