As golfers we know that the equipment we use on the golf course is vitally important to the outcome and ultimately our scores on the course as well. And there’s one major part of the equipment that will be particularly noticeable in and around these three quarter wedge distances and that’s going to be the golf ball. But this level when we’re hitting these types of shots, the feel and the spin on the golf ball can really have a quite a big bearing and an outcome, or quite a big bearing on the outcome of the actual shot we’re hitting. And that relates to how it feels of the club face and how it spins when it lands on the green. And as a more proficient golfer we need to have a really reliable reaction when the ball lands. You know we’re talking about landing the ball at exactly the correct distance, but how does it spin when it gets there?
Now the spin will sometimes be different on different surfaces. Over the hard surface it might bounce and spin less, softer surface we might get the ball to land and to spin back. But the golf ball also plays a vital role in this and you can see that because when you see the top players, they play with the same type of ball all the time, sometimes for many, many years. And when a golfer changes to a different type or brand of golf ball sometimes that can take months to make the adjustments and its particular this close up to the green shot where distance control and spin control is vitally important. This is where the issues will lie. They’ll often hit a shot on to the green and the ball will take one bounce and jump into the back bunker. And they are thinking, well with a different brand of ball that reaction would have been different. So as a golfer what I will suggest you do is try and stick to the same brand or type of golf ball. When you look in the shops you’ll see a myriad of different types of balls all doing or claiming to do different things.
The basic breakdown is going to be distance or feel, so distance and spin. The harder golf balls generally but cheaper balls are going to focus on distance claim. So that’s a harder cover and a harder call; that when you hit the ball it shoots out a long way, the danger is you trade off the spin. The softer balls, the more sort of feel baseball, they’re going to have softer covers and when you hit the ball gently with this sort of three quarter wedges, you’re going to feel the ball a little softer on the club face. The ball I going to react on the green with a little bit more spin. So make that consideration do you want the ball go further or do you want to gain a bit more control from inside the sort of 100 yard three quarter wedge technique. That’s how the ball can make a difference. The best tip I can give you is choose a ball and be consistent with that brand. Try to stick with that type of ball all of the time and then you’ll see a more consistent distance and a more consistent control of the spin with your three quarter-wedges.
