We’ve now discovered this idea of why it’s so important to hit these three-quarter wedge shots. It’s also really important to understand how we’re going to do that, how are we going to turn down a full powered swing? Most golfers spend most of our time hitting full powered shots and really to that end, the swing we make with the driver and the swing we make 9-iron are pretty similar. We stand to the ball in our normal stance, we make a full swing, and we hit it full power, so we’re pretty good at doing that. But how do we hit it less powerful? How do we take away a quarter of our power to hit this three-quarter wedge shot? Well there’s a couple of things you can do in your address position that I think will encourage the shorter more controlled swing.

The first thing, it’s just simply I want you to grip down on the club, lowering your hands down on the club like this basically not holding this top end will reduce the amount of power that you have. The club head speed will slow down. It’s difficult to factor in exactly how much. You might say an inch is about 10 yards, but you really need to do a couple of tests on this yourself. But as you grip down the club lower and lower, you will reduce the amount of power the club head has. The next thing to come to, if you’re gripping down you should probably stand closer because if I take my normal address position and then grip down it now looks like I’m really reaching and stretching. So I’m going to move a little bit closer to the golf ball. And again to that end I’m going to generate less power, because my legs can drive and turn as quick and that’s a good thing, because remember we want this three-quarter powered swing. So I’m griping down the club, standing a little bit nearer. I’m also going to move the ball back in my stance a little bit by having the ball a little bit further back in my stance, is going to be a really good job and not allowing me to spin and turn through the ball quite so quickly. So I’m not going to generate maximum power, but I should get a really nice controlled strike on the ball, because my body weight is a little bit more stable, I’m not spinning through very much, I can focus on a good accurate contact on to the back of the ball. So grip down, move a little bit nearer, and have the ball a little bit further back in your stance. A three great adjustments to get well on your way to make three quarter wedge swings.
