Position Your Golf Ball Using A Sliding Scale (Video) - Lesson 14 by PGA Pro Pete Styles

So now we’re in a position where we can establish where the wedges are, where are the drivers and where are the mid irons are going to be within the stance. And I think it’s important to understand, this position isn’t necessarily fixed, it’s a very sliding scale. So we understand that the clubs throughout the bag change very gradually. It’s not irons and woods but it’s wedges, short irons, medium irons, long irons, hybrid clubs, fairway woods, driver. So it’s a very progressive slide. Each club gets gradually longer, each club gets more or less loft as we move down the scale.

So as we set up the golf ball, we want to establish the same sliding scale. So as I set up the ball, I’ve got this ball and this cane lined up and the same here and here. So when I set up with this first cane, I want to get that cane in the center of my stance and that’s going to be my wedge position right down the center of my stance. I then got to set my driver up, this cane is down the inside of my left foot, my front foot, that’s going to be my driver ball position right there and therefore it stands to the reason that one in the middle is going to be my mid iron ball position. So my mid iron ball position here just slightly left of center and ahead of center. So as I take my three club in setup there, that’s how it would be standing to each club. Now if this is my wedge and this is my 6 iron, we’ve got to fit the 9, 8 and 7 in that space. And then we’ve got the 6 iron here. So we’ve got to fit 5, 4, the hybrid, three wood and the driver depending on how many clubs you have in different parts of your bag, sliding scale. Roughly it’s going to be about half an inch per club. So when you and practice, set yourself up something like this and just work on that gradual scale half an inch per club moving forwards. Nothing really goes behind the center in your stance; nothing really goes in front of the inside of your front foot. It’s just a very gradual shift between all the other clubs on that sliding scale. And hopefully if you can understand that sliding scale model, you’ll never be unsure about where your ball position is, you’ll always have a really good clear way of clarifying where your ball position should be.
