Now if you are a golfer that has been working hard on gauging the speed of your longer putts better and you are working had on practice drills to gain the better control of the speed. Yet you are still finding that when you go out and play you are still making lots of mistakes, you are still making too many three putts. And don’t forget speed is the reason why you would be three putting. Here’s a really little cheap, really simple, really great little drill to encourage you to strike the ball better to avoid those three putts. So here all I have done is I have just taken a little bit of blue tac, a little bit of tacky plastic that you would use to stick the pictures onto the wall at home with. And I have actually lined it up on my putter face with just enough space for the club to strike the ball without actually hitting too much of the toe and too much of the heel against the blue tac.

And the nice thing with this is a great visual aid that when I look down on my putter I can see the gate in the middle that I want to try and strike the ball from. It is also a great aid that if I did hit from the outside or the toe or the heel I get instant feedback. The feel of it, the sight if it and also the fact the ball is not going to go straight, it’s going to shoot off sideways. So what I would do is once I set up my little gate and you can start with quite a wide area but as you get more proficient and better at this you can narrow that blue tac in a little bit until it becomes smaller and smaller. Lined up nicely in the center of my putter face if I make a straight back and straight through stroke it feels and rolls like a normal putt. But if I was to maybe have a little look up too early to see where the ball was rolling to, I would probably get a bad contact toe or heel that is definitely going to affect the distance and the speed my putt rolls and raises the chance of a three putt. So again a very little simple, really quick drill that you can do in your own home just with a piece of blue tac on the putter face and next time you are going to play in the golf course you will less three putts because of that little training aid.
