So, we've talked now about the importance of keeping a good strong front arm in the address position and also talked about how important it is to keep a good strong front arm down to impact, to then let the rear arm extend at the same point for good extended arms through the impact zone. And here is a great exercise to make sure that you're keeping that front arm in a nice strong position and it's also going to help create width in the back swing because we've got this good strong front arm here. There's nothing to say now that in the back swing the golfer was not going to do this and pull the arm and then collapse. So, what we often encourage the golfers to do here is to reach back and feel like it create width. Now, I've [pulled] this back just out of range. So, I have to really work hard to stretch back to touch that back. Now, it's important that I'm stretching back to touch that back and quite importantly I'm not swaying because I could reach that back real easily. If I sway over here I can hit it that easy, but I want to try and keep my bodyline centered so I'm directly over the top of the golf ball and I'm reaching back to touch that back with hands and arms rather than just swaying back and letting the club bang into it. So, I could go ahead and hit some golf shots from this position with the sensation of trying to reach that back on the back swing to then keep super wide for my downswing to help and enable my arms to stay straighter through the hitting and through the impact zone.
So, next time you go to the driving range, try and consider whether your left arm is staying straight enough, position a golf back right at the back here at full extension but not sway and then see if you can get close to that back on the back swing to then hit it. Now, as you hit down you won't hit the back on the down swing, the fear for lot of golfers is, well, if I reach it here sure I'm going to hit it on the way down but actually your down swing you should be moving to your left, you're going to be a lot narrower on your downswing, a lot shallower. So, don’t worry about hitting the back of the down swing but do try and touch it on the back swing to make sure you've got great wide arms in your back swing.
