Legs Play Different Role in the Modern Golf Swing (Video) - by Pete Styles

If you ever go back and watch the classic matches or the classic golf swings from a good few years ago Sometimes they have a TV program that replays these sort of old golf tournaments, you'll often see how the golf swing has changed, not just the clothing, not just the equipment but the actual way the players are hitting the golf ball that's changed and evolved. One of the easiest things to identify that has changed and different is the involvement of the legs in the golf swing. You watch the world's best players now. A lot of them are very quiet in their bottom halves, very stable, very solid and it's certainly a more consistent approach to hitting the golf ball. So from the setup position very strong in the legs, quiet turn back of the left knee for the right-handed golfer, just kicks in a little bit, drives back towards impact, slight straightening of the right leg, left knee snapping back straight and then a turn through to a finish whereas back in the day a much more flamboyant approach to the leg action. Golfer sets up to the ball, big left knee movement and left knee kicks right the way in here and then jumps back out again around there. Right now knee drives towards the golf ball at impact, right foot almost fully followed through and then they're off and they may even take a little step afterwards.

But due to the way physiology has changed, golf clubs have changed, golf ball has changed, the shafts have changed particularly, we have a much more sort of robotic, stable knocking-through-the-golf-ball type of action. So if you feel like that you're very flamboyant with your leg action and you're really driving the golf ball, I’m afraid you're 30 years too late. You need to be playing golf back in the day. Then we would have gotten away with that. These days much more stable, much more solid. Try and keep your legs nice and quiet. Wide stance, balanced finish position. Keep your leg action out of it and that should give you more consistency in the way you play the game.
