Okay, what we’re talking about now is to show you what a proper shoulder turn should be. A shoulder turn is something that should go through 90 degrees. So if I set up to the camera here, I put my club across my shoulders, and I set up here, when I swing the club back, my left shoulder should be going and aiming at the ball. So if I get to that position here, my shoulders are going through 90 degrees, and that’s a correct shoulder turn. Another way I kind of keep getting message over because there are other ways of getting that to see it rather than trying to turn this or trying to do this. If I said to you, set yourself up, and now concentrate on setting the back to the target, so now you’re the target.
So I’m going to set myself up, and if I said to you right, set yourself up to the target, now turn your back to the target, I’ve now got the same shoulder turn by focusing on turning my back to the target. Because the whole idea, there’s two things in golf, you’ll either turn your shoulders, or you’ll tilt your shoulder and then turn. So most golfers, tend to get over the ball USA 18, 20 handicap and higher, and they tend to go more like this. Well they’ve actually tilted their shoulders. It feels like a turn, because remember, you can’t see yourself. So you’re over that ball, there’s your shoulder turn, and then from here, we go back, and you end upon your back foot.
So think about it, how many times when you hit a golf ball, did you find yourself hitting the ball where having done the correct shoulder turn, you feel the weight getting through on the left hand side, so your belt buckle is facing the target here the nice finish? Or do you find yourself hitting the golf ball and being prone to doing this sort of thing. Where I’ve tilted my shoulders, and gone. And I’ve just stepped off the ball. Come on be honest, yes you’ve done that haven’t you. I’ve seen members of my golf through week and week out doing it. And it’s a delayed reaction, it’s not a case of jumping off the golf shot, it’s what they – if they think they’re turning their shoulders, but they’re actually tilting their shoulders.
So, what’s a correct shoulder turn? If I set myself up to the ball, you can see my backbones in another 45 degree angle. And if I turn my shoulders through 90 degrees and pivot around the axle, so I keep the same body position, you can see my body is still in the same position. I still got my weight forward, and I’ve just pivoted nicely through 90 degrees, and there’s the position that we should be. Remember, that’s the correct position. This is what you might have been doing. Same set up, look at the difference now. The body is out of position, and you can see the shoulder, once gone up, once gone down why I refer to a bit of a see saw swing, see saw.
So, a proper shoulder turn is a – shoulders that go through 90 degrees, and the best way of actually building that feel is just basically either putting the club across your shoulders, like I’ve done here like a mummy. And then from here, just say right, turn the shoulder through 90 and so now the grip faces the ball, and that’s the feeling. And I bet if you’ve not being doing it and you do that it’ll feel like a bit strange. And that will be a good result won’t it? Because that will mean that you’ve not been doing it correctly. So now you’ve got the knowledge, go and put that into practice, you now know what a correct shoulder turn looks like, and hopefully you’ll get the feel once you’ve gone out and tried it. Put it into practice.
