A lot of people always tell me that golf isn't a game of power and it's all about hitting the ball a long way and they're always trying to sort of shorten their shots and keep the ball in play a little bit more. But if you look at the reality of a golf course these days, most golf courses, this isn't even club standard golf courses, par 72, 6,500 yards, tournament and professional golf courses, over 7,000 yards. Quite importantly, only maybe a par 70 or 71, so you're losing that extra shot as well.
So, distance in the game of golf now is becoming a bigger and bigger factor. Yes, golf balls fly further and golf clubs will fly it further, big and heavy drivers, lightweight golf clubs, hybrid golf clubs, all that sort of thing will help you hit the ball further. But if you offer any golfer on the planet an extra 10 yards in their swing or in their shots, they would bite your arm off of that extra 10 yards. It does make such a big difference, particularly when you consider they're down at par 5, you're requiring three or four shots to get to the green.
If you can have 10 yards extra per shot, by the time you get to the green, you could be 30 or 40 yards closer. Now, hitting three clubs or four clubs less into a green is a significant improvement in your game and going to get you significantly closer to the flag. So, 10 yards extra for each shot, 30 or 40 yards closer, that means you can hit into the green with a pitching wedge rather than a 7 or even a 6 iron.
So, offering someone extra power in their game is going to be something that most people would always take off you. So, if you can manage to generate a little bit more power and club head speed within your swing and you can get this ball flying out there, just 10, 15 or even 20 yards further, the modern game of golf is a power game. If you can get extra distance from your swing, extra power and extra length on your tee shots, that's something that we want to try and utilize.
Yes, we want to try and keep control within your swing as well, so these next set of drills are going to be all about how you can hit the ball further and keep controlling your game.
