The correct answer to this is to simply aim the club face at the target, or where you want the ball to land.

However, if you are playing a high bunker shot you will have opened the club face and this will now set the club in a different position to how you usually look at it, so you will need to adjust your set up to get the club face aiming back towards the target.

To open the club face up and therefore add more loft on to the club face to produce a higher ball flight, if you are a right-handed player, you need to hold the handle of the club so that the name on the grip is centred. If you do not have a name on your grip, then you may have a grip aid or arrows that you can use instead. Usually you hold the handle with the name of the grip centred on the front of the club, but if you wish to open the club face to produce a higher flighted shot, then you need to rotate the name on the grip around to the right. The name on the grip should be off centre to the right and then place your hands on to the golf club and take up how you hold the club to play your shot.

After rotating the handle to the right and opening the club face up, you will now notice that the club face is set differently to when you hold the club with the names centred on the front of the grip. The club face will now be aiming to the right if you have opened the club face. However, an open club face will hit the ball to the right of the target, so before you play your shot you need to rotate your feet more to the left than usual in order to allow the club face to aim at your intended target.

To aim the club face of your golf club at the target, you usually stand parallel to the target line, to allow the club face to aim straight along the target line. If you stand parallel to the target line and set your feet alignment parallel left of the target with an open club face, then the club face will be aiming to the right of the target and your bunker shot will miss the target to the right.

Aiming the club face to the left of the target will not produce an accurate golf shot. The club face always needs to aim at the target to produce an accurate shot. If your club face is open as you need height on the bunker shot, then you need to rotate your body and feet alignment around to the left, until the club face is aiming at the target.

Aiming your club face right of the target may have the desired effect of adding loft to the shot but as the club face has most of the influence over the starting direction of your shot, your ball will finish to the right of the target also.
