You're Correct!
Hybrid golf clubs allow you to achieve sweet shots relatively easily. But this only happens if you are making a great swing with the club. If you and the club are out of position when you swing, then you will struggle to get the club head to approach the golf ball from the optimum angle and direction to create the sweet shot, and regardless of the fact that you are swinging a forgiving hybrid golf club, you will mis-hit the golf ball.
The first position to check as you swing the club head away from the golf ball on your back swing is your takeaway. Your takeaway is the initial movement that you make away from the golf ball and it finishes when the club is around hip high. The check points to work on achieving at the end of your takeaway are that you have begun to rotate your shoulders and maintained the extension in your left arm (right handed golfers). You have hinged your wrists and the club has become parallel to the target line and horizontal, with the club face angled towards the target line.
From this position, you need to continue your movement to the next check point which is when your hands reach chest high. In this position, you are looking to have continued rotating your shoulders so that they are around 45 degrees turned. You have maintained the extension in your left arm, which is now horizontal with your hands opposite the centre of your chest. You should have set your wrists by this point, so you should have created an L shape between your left arm and the shaft of the golf club. If you extended the shaft of the golf club downwards, the line down from it should hit the target line and back of your left hand, your left wrist and left forearm should all be flat/straight to each other.
The final back swing check point is the top of your back swing. In this position, your shoulders should now be fully rotated to 90 degrees from their starting position. Your hips will have rotated as well but less than 90 degrees. Your left arm should still be extended and the shaft of the golf club should be horizontal and pointing parallel left of the target. The back of your left hand, left wrist and left forearm should still all be flat/straight to each other.
Achieving these check points and positions will have you swinging on plane, with the club face square and with full rotation and leverage, giving you the opportunity to move back down towards the golf ball and hit a sweet golf shot.

It is correct that the want to achieve a full 90 degree shoulder turn on your back swing to hit sweet golf shots. However, if you turn your shoulders too quickly then the club head will swing back too much on the inside of the target line and this will result in a flat back swing, causing you a variety of issues that prevent you achieving a sweet shot.
Sorry Try Again! - See Explanation Below
When you swing back, you need to keep the shaft of the golf club pointing at the target line when your hands are at around chest high. This will mean that the club head is on plane and swinging around you at the optimum angle. Pointing the shaft vertically at the sky means that the club head is too high and steep and it will be difficult to achieve a sweet shot from this position.

Pointing the shaft beyond horizontal at the top of your back swing may feel that you are going to hit the ball further, but you actually have an over swing in this position and you will have to use your wrists excessively on your down swing which will cause you problems in achieving a sweet connection and strike.
