You're Correct!
If you place a golf ball on the floor in front of you and address it as though you are going to hit it, the side of the ball that is closest to you is known as the inside and the side of the ball that is furthest away from you is known as the outside.
To hit a golf ball correctly, you should aim to hit the right side of the golf ball if you are a right-handed golfer, as this will allow you to strike the ball from the centre of the club face and also allow you to present the club face to the golf ball so that it is aiming at the target. Doing this will allow you to hit a straight shot.
Instead of hitting the inside of the golf ball, what you should really work on achieving is to swing the golf club from the inside. If you place an alignment pole on the floor to represent the target line, the line that you want the ball to fly down to the target, then the side that you are standing on is known as the inside and the far side of the alignment pole is known as the outside. What more consistent players achieve when swinging the golf club, is an in to out swing path. This simply means that as the club head is approaching the ball, it is travelling from the inside of the target line.
Approaching the ball with the club head from the inside of the target line will then allow you to be able to rotate your body through impact and then extend your arms out towards the target. This allows you to generate maximum club head speed and also allows you to square the club face to the target. By doing this, you will hit your longest golf shots and you will also hit them straight and achieve a high degree of accuracy.
To help you learn how to hit from the inside, try the following drill. Place an alignment pole or one of your golf clubs on the floor to represent the target line. Place one of your head covers on the far side of that line about a foot to the right of where you will play the golf ball from. This is now blocking the outside of the target line so all you have to work on doing is swinging the club head away from the ball and then swinging it back down to the ball without hitting the head cover. If you have your club face aiming at the target as you do this you will hit a straight golf shot, improve your accuracy and generate more power.

If you hit the inside of the golf ball, the ball would be struck from an off centre position from the club face, it would be struck more from the toe, or far end of the club head. Any ball that is struck from off centre loses accuracy. A shot struck from the toe will be hit to the right of the target due to the club face twisting from the off centre impact.

If you struck the inside of the golf ball with the centre of the club face, the club face would need to be aiming extremely right in order for this to happen and as a consequence of this club face position, you would hit the ball extremely right of the target and therefore lose accuracy on your shots.

Aiming to hit the outside or far side of the golf ball would result in a very steep and out to in swing path and a closed club face. This would result in poor, pulled golf shots that would fly lower than expected. Not a very good combination we are sure you will agree.
