Molinari was born in Turin, Italy, and achieved success as an amateur golfer, twice winning the Italian Amateur Stroke Play Championship twice, and being victorious at the 2004 Italian Match Play Championship. After this success in 2004, Molinari turned professional. He gained his first European Tour card for the 2005 season, through success at qualifying school. At the end of his first season on the European Tour, Molinari finished in 86th place on the Order of Merit.
The following season Molinari achieved his first win on the European Tour, at the Telecom Italia Open. This victory helped him to finish in 38thplace on the Order of Merit. Over the following seasons Molinari did not achieve another win, but he did finish in the top 10 at events on several occasions. During 2009 season, Molinari entered the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time. The following season, Molinari was part of the victorious Ryder Cup team. This was a successful season for Molinari who won the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China. In addition, Molinari finished in the top 10 in eleven other tournaments. Although Molinari did not win in 2011, he again finished in the top 10 on several occasions.
It was 2012 before Molinari achieved his third win on the European Tour, at the Reale Seguros Open de España. That season he was a member of the winning Ryder Cup team. In 2014 Molinari had a reasonably successful year on the PGA Tour, as a non-member. This meant that he earned a Tour card for the following season.
Away from golf, Molinari enjoys soccer, and is a fan of British team, West Ham Utd.
As of the end of 2014, Molinari was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour but he had amassed total prize money of $2,113,349.
