Yes, you got that right: 6 years have come to pass since Miura released a new forged blade iron. But since we’re living in the current year, not 2013, the good news for the brand’s aficionados is that we now have the Miura MB-101 iron, a brand new golf-tool aimed at people looking for a compact and classic shot making tool. If you were wondering, the last blade iron launched by the Japanese company in 2013 was dubbed MB-001, and since then, Miura launched a myriad of new irons (ok, we’re exaggerating a bit), but zero pure blades. Well, that until now; here’s Shinei Miura explaining it:
“This is a model of which the entire Miura family can be proud. My father is as passionate about the MB-101 as any club he has ever designed. Our hope is that it will be recognized as one of the finest irons our factory has ever produced and will remain in our model lineup for years to come.”
In case you didn't know, the Japanese company takes pride in crafting timeless forged irons, blades included, and some say that Miura is the master of forged irons, due to Japan’s millennial tradition in metallurgy (think along the lines of Japanese samurai swords and all that). However, make no mistake: this is definitely not a rebadged Miura Baby Blade boasting a new name, pretty far from it actually. Just like any Japanese, Miura takes pride in its pursuit of perfection, and their philosophy in regard to design is kaizen, a Japanese word well known in the automotive industry, which means continuous improvement. When it comes to the MB-101, every little detail has been over-engineered to perfection, with the ultimate goal being the creation of the ultimate blade iron, specially crafted for elite players seeking for the best for the best, especially in regard to performance and precision. So yeah, this blade-family can be best described as a Samurai’s katana made by a Japanese blade master. If you think about Japanese sword making and then take a close look at the transition from the hosel to the topline of the new Miura MB-101 iron, you’ll understand that this is a well-designed club, and that’s mostly due to the influence of Shinei and Yoshitaka Miura; the new blade boasts a more organic muscle shape and it’s beautifully rounded, to complement the new sole design that works wonders in improving turf interaction. The new blade made in Japan is proof of concept for the theory that the smaller the club head is, the more concentrated a golfer will be over the ball, and theoretically speaking, this should translate into better strikes in real world. Taking the concept even further, that would mean that the more compact the head is, the more mass will be put behind the ball, even when it comes to mishits. And yes, that includes better feedback. Here’s the president of Miura Golf Hoyt McGarity:
“Miura’s reputation is centered on its history of crafting exceptional, championship-caliber blade irons, and the MB-101 continues that legacy”
As per tech specs, the new Miura MB-101 is forged to perfection from premium S25C soft carbon steel, and features a beautiful satin finish chrome which is a work of art into itself, aimed at making golf purists happy. And pricing is pretty alluring, considering that the MB-101 set runs 3-PW and is available for $280 per iron.
