Callaway just revealed their brand spanking new Epic Flash Star Line, which is described as light and launchable. Truth be told, the Epic Flash Star Line benefits from Callaway’s latest technologies, and the end result is nothing short of impressive. The design team made it look awesome, fast and light, as expected from a Callaway product by the way, and the finished product is actually epic. The Epic Flash Star line boasts one of the most inspired names in golf, and it includes a forged set of irons, which shows the general public that even forged irons can be really fast, as well as a driver and the usual fairway woods and hybrids.
The new line-up is actually an update/refresh of sorts of the original Epic Star Line from Callaway, and it brings improvements and tech innovations across the board, while raising the bar in the industry by setting a new level of performance in the lightweight/premium category. If you’re familiar with the industry, you’re probably aware of the fact that designing high end ultra-lightweight gear is not an easy task, as it presents the R&D team with a number of design challenges. The point being that you only have a limited amount of mass to play with, i.e. stuff to move around while watching carefully the final total weight. However, Callaway’s engineers managed to work their magic, and they ended up with creating a spectacular set of golf clubs which arrive with all the technological bells and whistles available in the company’s paraphernalia, including the famous Jailbreak and Flash Face technologies, which are aimed at helping slower swing speed golfers to achieve the ultimate goal: more distance from literally everywhere.
The philosophy behind the Epic Flash Star Line is that golfers who look to improve their speed would require a set of golf clubs that permits them to use shorter sticks more often, and that’s pretty obvious if you come to think about the physics of the game. However, it’s very probable that you’re not going to see PGA Tour pros playing around with these babies, due to their design: the Epic Flash Star Line is focused on helping slow golfers to swing faster, a thing that elite players already achieved. To make a long story short, the latest golf clubs from Callaway are a match made in heaven for any slow-swing golfer looking for the lightest sticks possible. Every club in the Epic Flash Star Line was designed with an emphasis to saving weight, thus they are engineered to be easy to swing, that’s the lesson to be taken home by our readers. It’s also important to mention that the irons and woods benefited the most from the company’s weight saving technologies, but don’t worry as everything’s on the up and up with the Star Line.
Let’s begin with the Callaway Epic Flash Star driver, which comes with a Golf Pride JL00 grip and a UST Mamiya ATTAS Speed graphite shaft, for a grand total of $699.99 MSRP. What do you get for that kind of money? Weighing a mere 266 grams, the driver was created by Callaway’s R&D team with an ultra-thin Flash face, designed using the latest technological innovations, the likes of machine learning and artificial intelligence. If you think that’s an exaggeration, much ado about nothing and all that palaver, you should learn that the difference in total weight between the older-gen Epic Flash Driver and the new kid on the block is massive: 50 grams. If it doesn’t sound like much, well, it is, in real life, as it makes for almost 16 percent in mass reduction in regard to the total package, and 25 percent if you consider the entire mass of a regular driver head on its own.
Also, considering the fact that the driver is the lightest club in the Epic Flash Star line, shaving 50 grams of weight is astonishing. Most of the weight saving is due to the fact that the driver is the only member of the family to lack an adjustable hosel. So, having a driver with no hosel adjustability comes with strange benefits, and to compensate for the removal of the adjustable hosel, the new Epic Flash Driver is available with more loft options, including a 10.5, 12, and now a 13.5 degrees, i.e. this is the perfect solution if you’re looking to launch the ball hassle free. It’s also worth mentioning that due to the UST Mamiya ATTAS Speed graphite shaft, the Epic Flash Star driver benefits from the legendary 30-gram shaft, a product that has been a Japan-only kind of a deal; that until now, when it has become available for North American golfers, which is nothing short of awesome!
Speaking of Jailbreak technology, the Epic Flash Driver comes with the familiar pair of bars located behind the hitting area, which join the sole, as well as the well-known triaxial carbon fiber crown. The respective bars are aimed at stiffening the front of the club’s head, so it deforms less at ball impact, and also makes it more efficient in regard to returning energy into the shot. Every strategy and design trick was used to help slower swinging golfers to get more speed with less effort, which is commendable on Callaway’s part.
Moving along with our story, let’s talk a little bit about the Epic Flash Star Fairway Woods and Hybrids. Just like the Star driver, the new fairway foods are built using Callaway’s combat proven technologies, and we mean that literally. Things like Flash Face, Jailbreak, and the famous Face Cup, all the great things that made Callaway drivers (at least since the XR) to win the hearts and minds of golfers worldwide. If you’re old enough, you probably remember how incredibly fast the XR fairways were, and that’s still one of the best features of the Epic Flash Star. One of the things that make the latest fairway woods exceptional is Callaway’s proprietary triaxial carbon-fiber crown thing, which is incredibly light, not to mention the Jailbreak bars located inside the club’s head, helping with producing increased ball speed and distance. On top of that, you’ll discover a non-adjustable weight located in the back, with the final purpose being the lowering of the CoG (center of gravity), in order to promote higher flying shots.
Usually speaking, Epic Flash fairway woods are offered with an adjustable hosel, but in this particular case, the Epic Flash Star comes with a non-adjustable/bonded hosel, for weight saving purposes, obviously. And it’s also pretty clear that this so-called trade-off is 100 percent worth it, at least for golfers who struggle with generating club head speed. To sweeten the deal, Callaway offers 5 lofts to choose from, hence if you work with a competent fitter, you’ll have zero problems in regard to finding the perfect fairway wood to help you achieve the desired distance. In case you were wondering, the new fairway woods in the Epic Flash Star line-up are retailing for $399.99 and they come with a UST Mamiya ATTAS Speed graphite shaft and Golf Pride JL00 grip, being available as 3-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood, 9-wood, 11-wood with a carbon-fiber crown and cup face design.
The Epic Flash Star Hybrids are retailing for $325 and they arrive fully packed with Callaway’s latest and greatest technologies, as well as an UST Mamiya ATTAS Speed graphite shaft and Golf Pride JL00 grip. Specs wise, the hybrids feature the now familiar carbon fiber crown, a Carpenter 455 steel face cup, and they’re available as 3-hybrid, 4-hybrid, 5-hybrid, 6-hybrid, 7-hybrid and 8-hybrid. Just like the Rogue, these new hybrids come with the latest-gen Jailbreak technology, which is designed for maximum energy transfer. Another technology worth mentioning is the Metal-Injected Molding Tungsten weight which is located into the sole of the club head, and aimed at improving both launch and trajectory, as well as boosting overall forgiveness. As an interesting factoid, this is the first time when Callaway uses its patented triaxial carbon fabric in a hybrid; the respective crown is incredibly light, as it weighs a mere 5 grams, and works wonders in regard to lowering the club’s center of gravity, together with the metal injected molded tungsten weight. You should consider using the Epic Flash Star Hybrids and ditch your longer irons provided you feel you lack club head speed, as these babies are available all the way to an eight iron replacement, i.e. they hit the sweet spot between a hybrid and an iron.
And speaking of irons, we have the Epic Flash Star Forged Irons, which make for ultra-premium gear, built and designed for golf purists looking for perfect feel and ideal acoustics, not to mention explosive distance. Retailing for $300 each, the Epic Flash Star Forged Irons are available with an Aerotech Steelfiber FC or Mitsubishi Tensei AV Silver graphite shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips, in a hollow design, and built using a forged 1025 carbon steel body, with a cup face design and a state of the art urethane vibration dampening system. Obviously, these beautiful forged irons are built to enhance distance, and they boast an incredible “infinite black” finish, to quote Callaway themselves; the point being, besides impressive performance and cutting edge technology, these forged irons are absolutely stunning, as good optics and high performance seem to go together like peas and carrots nowadays, which is great news for golf aficionados by the way.
To describe them in a few words, just like the original Epic irons, the new Epic Flash Star Forged Irons are oozing speed, class and elegance, while hiding a lot of technological prowess under the hood so to speak, everything in an appealing mid-sized package. And speaking of high performance, one of the main culprits in this regard is Callaway’s Suspended Tungsten Core technology, which by the way is used for the first time in a forged iron, and offers shot making and speed in one package. Brilliant work on Callaway’s part, to put it succinctly, as they used Urethane Microspheres in the Suspended Tungsten core in order to achieve the ideal CoG, which promotes spin and launch, while, at the same time, allows the face to flex in order to generate increased ball speed. But speed is nothing without control, hence Callaway’s variable face thickness technology comes into play, working to tame the beast in tandem with the 360 Cup Face technology. On top of that, you’ll get a redesigned VTF pattern for more consistent spin rates and ball speed club to club, i.e. these irons are excellent for both low and high handicappers who seek total control over their shots. Speaking of “confidence inspiring”, these beautiful forged irons from Callaway are ticking all the boxes, and you can take that to the bank.
