The new and one hundred percent milled Spitfire putter from PXG has been announced recently by one of the world’s best-known premium gear manufacturers. The Spitfire putter is advertised as introducing leading edge custom fitting technology to the masses, and coming from PXG, that’s a bold claim to say the least, considering the price tags the company accustomed us with. The new addition to PXG’s milled putters lineup, the Spitfire respectively, has a name inspired from the famous single-seat fighter used by the British Royal Air Force in World War 2, and true to its name, boasts a unique yet clean design, that’s exceptionally forgiving and incredibly easy to align.
The new Spitfire putter is part of the company’s GEN2 collection, while the Spitfire is just the first of 9 club heads available. To give you a hint about PXG’s marketing department’s sense of humor, other models include the Lucky “D”, Closer, Mustang, Brandon Mini Gunboat, Bat Attack and Operator. Hilarious names aside, each new putter head is specially crafted to be custom configured for its new owner via a professional fitting session, thus enabling PXG’s customers to choose a specific style to complement one’s particular style, as well as the hosel that best suits their stroke.
Being able to pair a specific putter model with one’s chosen hosel, whether plumber’s neck, double bend, armlock or heel shafted, will basically dictate the overall/final assembled mass. There are large sole weights at play, which are made using lighter titanium or heavier tungsten, no less than four of them in the Spitfire putter, and they are used to influence both bias and club head weight. The weights are offered in 5, 10, 15 and 20 gram options for the Spitfire putter, which needless to say are very easy to adjust for delivering optimal performance.
Moreover, you must learn that the new Spitfire was designed to help with assisting golfers with alignment issues, i.e. the Spitfire comes with 2 different alignment features: there are angled surfaces, which point towards the front of the ball, as well as a short distance down the line, aimed at helping golfers to keep their eyes focused on the start line during their putts. Moreover, the Spitfire features several optical aides in the shape of form of parallel lines as well as perpendicular surfaces, which help with keeping the putter square to the start line.
Finally, the latest PXG putter boasts the company’s patented and highly innovative pyramid face pattern. These pyramid like (shark teeth like if you want) structures are specially designed to literally bite (hence the shark teeth comparison) into the cover of the golf ball (forget about scratches), for creating better feel and sound, as well as more consistent roll and launch characteristics. The highest pattern density is visible around the center, while the size of the respective shark-teeth/pyramids varies across the face, and this particular design feature helps offset the ball speed loss, which is common when it comes to mishits, and also plays a role in delivering more distance control across the face.
