One of the things that people struggle with when playing a three quarter shot is actually committing to the technique. A lot of this is because the amount of speed which is being taken from the shot makes people feel that they’re being careful. It makes them feel that they they’re trying to control the ball a little bit more. And when you switch on the conscious mind and you try and control shots; that’s where problems start to creep in. So how can you manage to have that shot technique and yet still commit to the overall swing? Well, there are a few things that you can do and there are a few things that you can practice.
If you are struggling with controlling swing length with the arms another great way to try and control things is with the chest. If you control things a little bit more with the chest you can get the rotation moving a little bit quicker and it feels like you can turn through the ball a little bit more – with a little bit more power. So what I mean by this is if you are coming through the ball and you feel yourself slowing down and you feel yourself not committing to the shot, take the feeling away from the hands and from the arms and focus on the centre of your chest. Get a little bit away forward which will have your angle of attack increase a little bit more down to impact and focus on your standing position as you turn back, feel like it’s pointing away from the target and slightly off to the right hand side.
If its pointing fully away from the target that will be that full shoulder turn that you don’t want, so turning it back and getting any point slightly off to the right. But then as you come through feel like your chest is getting out and over the ball, so in front of the ball in relation to the target and then turn it strongly through the shot. As you turn it strongly through the shot that will keep the angle of attack travelling downward yes, but it will also keep the acceleration through the ball. So if you are struggling to commit take the feeling away from the hands and the arms and focus on your chest position. Using more rotation and using a faster rotation with the chest should help you move through the ball a little bit better and help you get the feeling that what committing to this type of technique will feel like.
