One key thing that players need to do before introducing their shot on the course is practise the three quarter swing. Now one of the key differences between the full swing and the three quarter swing is obviously the length of the technique. Now to practise this I always encourage people to practise a full swing and then practise the three quarter swing and then practise a full swing and a three quarter swing and so on and so forth. You can even have half swings into the equation as well. This is because when you are hitting shots you need to get the feeling and you need to get an understanding of what the differences are.
If you just start to hit three quarter shot after three quarter shot, if you get it right yes, it can help grove it very, very quickly. But if you’ve got a sensation of the differences between a full swing and a three quarter swing right after each other then that should help ingrain the feelings even quicker upon your subconscious. So when you are getting settled to this ball and first of all you are going to have a nice full swing and again, I’m going to be focusing on my left arm position and my arm position throughout this swing. So, on this swing I’m going to try and get my left arm pointing straight up at the sky or to that 12 o’clock position on the clock face and then moving it through with a nice full turn.
So I’m getting set up, got my target into this position here and turning back and through into a nice full swing technique. Now what I’m going to be doing on my next shot here is really focussing on shortening that whole technique down. So I’m going to be trying to get my arm into a much shorter position. I might try and shorten even a little bit more but the three quarter position for this half turn here with my left arm and then moving it through to the same position on the way through. So I’ve just hit my full shot, I’m going to enter the same setup with some three quarter shots you can put a little bit more weight on the front foot if you do want to hit it low as well but I’m going to change the length of this swing.
So left arm to half turn and then moving my right arm through to a similar position on the way through. And then what I would do, I will get in with a couple of balls and I’ll be doing exactly the same, full swing, three quarter swing, full sing three quarter swing. That is the best way to practice and get the feeling of the differences between the two techniques.
