So here’s a really great drill to encourage you to master that one piece takeaway motion. As we talked about with an iron swing, we want the one piece takeaway to be one piece, low and slow. And actually you’re probably using a one piece takeaway already in your game when you’re using your putter. So most golfers when they use their putter, they are aware that the tempo should be slow and low and everything should move as one piece. We don’t often see people putting by picking the club up and dropping it down. So really you’ve already got a one piece takeaway in your golf game, and really we want to recreate that with the full swing.
So what I could encourage you to do is go to the putting green and stand on the putting green and just knock in a few three and four foot puts and feel how everything is one piece, low and slow. And then go to the side of the putting green and make a few full swings and feel how the takeaway should be largely similar to how it was with the putter. So I can dummy some putting strikes here, one piece, low and slow. One piece, low and slow.
And then I can drop my putter down, take up my mid iron and setup to the ball and the first part of the stroke there is my putting stroke. The first two or three feet back is the same as my putting stroke, low and slow with a one piece motion. From there, the rest of the takeaway can happen and the full swing can happen, one piece, low and slow. Then I can strike the ball down there but the first part of my swing back low and slow is very similar to my putting action. So use that putting exercise as a way of ingraining the one piece takeaway and mastering that takeaway movement for your full swing.
