About this glove: A mid-priced, all-leather glove from Callaway, the Dawn Patrol model aims to please value-conscious golfers who prize feel and comfort, but will sacrifice a little if it means paying about 10 bucks less.
In other words, golfers shouldn’t expect the thin, silky quality of a premium cabretta glove (a la Titleist’s Players Model). In exchange, they should get better durability and good performance.
Like Callaway’s Apex Tour model, the Dawn Patrol glove is perforated throughout the palm, fingers and thumb for increased breathability and reduced moisture. A terry cloth cuff at the wrist adds a soft touch while absorbing sweat.
Enough of the particulars. How about we take the Callaway Dawn Patrol golf glove for a spin around the course?
Appearance: You can never go wrong with a white golf glove, and there’s nothing remotely gaudy about Callaway’s Dawn Patrol. The only noticeable difference between this glove and a hundred others is the perforated palm. Even the thumb on this model is speckled with tiny holes, which are smaller than those on the backs of the fingers.
Comfort: Unless you’re accustomed to wearing a pricy cabretta glove, you won’t find much to complain about with the Dawn Patrol. Ours was a little tight at first, but was broken in after 20 swings on the range. Finger fit is fine, and an elastic strip across the backhand provides necessary flex.
Those perforations do come in handy (no pun intended) when leaving the glove on between shots, or if you’ve got sweaty palms. Hold the palm up to face a breeze and the hand cools right down.
Feel: To repeat, it’s all relative. Judged against other gloves in its price range, Callaway’s Dawn Patrol performs very well. Let’s put it this way: It’s unlikely to cost you any strokes by robbing your hands of sensitivity.
Tackiness: Nor will you lack for gripping power. Dawn Patrol grabs the club with authority in normal or even humid conditions.
Durability: Probably average for its class, which is still quite good. Treat your Dawn Patrol glove as though it were a swanky cabretta mitt – removing it between shots, rotating it with another glove, airing it out and laying it flat between rounds – and it should hold up for a minimum of 12 rounds and practice sessions combined.
Bottom line: Nothing about Callaway’s Dawn Patrol wows us. On the other hand, we can’t find any major flaws in it, either. It’s a nice-looking glove that provides the comfort, feel and durability we look for in a mid-priced model.
