Ted Ray was a British golfer who played around the same time as Harry Vardon and was renowned for one thing, and that was hitting the ball as hard as he could, he used to smash the living day lights out of it and was the longest hitter for quite a while during his heyday. Now the way he used to do this was just make many, many moves which increased speed and increased power. It didn’t mean he was the most accurate golfer, but when he caught a ball, it was flying well over 300 yards, using equipment by the way which is a lot less advanced than today. Now the movements that he made, some of the movements that he made, are on the way back, he got the club moving nice and wide away from the ball so he really stretched the club away from the ball and extended the arms, the hips also turned quite a lot, with the left heel rising up off the ground, until he got to a very, very long backswing position. Now from there, the whole body started to shift forwards, all the body started to turn as much as physically possible, and then he used his very strong arms and his very strong hands to really whip the club through the ball. Now this wasn’t the most accurate of actions like I said, but when he got it right, he hit the ball a very, very long way. And that is what he is renowned for and that is what helped him power to two major championship victories. So although this won’t be the most accurate change to anyone’s game, if you are looking to increase your distance, give it a go, and you might be able to power that ball out there, that little bit further.
