Stephen Gallacher is a Scottish tour professional who in the last two years has triumphed twice in the desert in Dubai to boost his world rankings, and to really put him amongst the top players in the world. It also catapulted him to be in the Rider Cup team last year where he led out the European team on the first day. Now Stephen Gallacher has a swing which has stayed with him for many, many years but he’s added in a few extra little bits recently, which is giving him that little bit of extra power and that little bit of extra ball speed when he needs it the most. What he does now in his golf swing is actually take the club back very nice and wide, but then at the last minute, gets the club very close to the body. And as the club comes very close to the body, he maintains the amount of lag between his hands and between the club, almost keeping this angle at 90 degrees between the wrist and the shaft, all the way down into impact before releasing it with a very large extension of the arms through. Now maintaining the angle between the wrist and the club really gives the club a lot more speed as it whips through and that allows him to hit the ball longer and also recently a little bit higher because he’s always been a very low ball flight player. So to get the launch on the ball, it’s very forward in the stance just inside the left heel, it’s a big wide swing, then going to narrow maintaining the lag down, and then just extending the arms through. And then when he gets it right, he hits the ball down there, a very, very long way. So if you are looking to increase the power, try and add that lag into the swing, and see where it takes you.
