What Is The Best Technique To Use On Uphill Lies On The Golf Course?Uphill lies are easy to play from if you know the changes to make in your address position, that will allow you to swing effectively and strike the golf ball well.

Initially, you need to address the golf ball so that you set your spine angle perpendicular to the uphill slope. To achieve this, work on getting your shoulders to reflect the angle of the slope that you are playing from. Place your weight more on your lower foot than usual and position the ball more towards your higher foot. This will allow you to set your spine perpendicular to the ground, which is how you set your spine to make your golf swing on a flat lie. From this position you will then be able to swing the club head with the slope angle, so down the slope as you swing away from the golf ball on your back swing and then up the slope through impact. This will allow you to strike the ball cleanly off the uphill lie.

However, the effect of the slope on your weight position will make it extremely difficult to transfer your weight through the golf shot as you usually would and you will find that you finish with more weight on your back foot than usual. This will also result in the golf ball flying right to left in the air once it is struck, so ensure that you aim to the right of target and align your feet more to the right than usual when playing from an uphill lie, to allow for the right to left ball flight.

When playing from an uphill lie, also remember that the ball will fly higher than it would from a flat lie, so take this into account and use a less lofted golf club to play the shot with, as a higher flighted shot will not travel as far and will also stop quicker when it lands - take an extra club or two, for the required shot distance.

Leaning in towards the slope will feel like you are going to balance better through the golf shot, however, you will not be setting your spine perpendicular to the ground and as a result you will swing the club head up from the slope on your back swing and then in towards the slope through impact, rather than swinging with the angle of the slope. This will cause you to strike the ball towards the ground on the uphill slope and as such the ball will not fly high and will finish short of the target.

Playing a shot from an uphill lie, as though it is a flat lie, making no changes to your set up position will not result in a successful shot. You must set your spine perpendicular to the slope in order to make a swing with the slope, rather than in to it. Setting up as though the ground is flat and making a swing from this position will result in the ball being struck into the slope.

If you aim to the left when playing from an uphill lie, then the resulting shot will miss the target on the left. With more weight positioned on your lower foot, you will make a more sweeping and arcing action as you swing and this will produce a flatter swing than usual. The effect of this is that the club head will approach the golf ball more from the inside of the target line than usual and with more weight on your lower (back) foot, the club head will close and the ball will fly right to left in the air.
