Sometimes it’s a really good exercise just to go to the putting green and practice putting but just with one hand. And ideally if that’s your weaker hand, you can actually build more strength and more stability with that weaker hand. You see a good proper putting stroke has a better unity where both hands work together as one unit rather than having one hand dominate or fight the other hand. And I think in life most people tend to be one sided dominant, so we are right hand dominant we play tennis with the right hand, brush our teeth with our right hand whatever it might be. Other people are left side dominant they do everything too much with their left hand.
When it comes to putting if my right hand is too dominant I can get a bit a flicky and a bit hitty with my – with my right hand my right hand rides over the top of my left; my left gives way too much. And that certainly happened personally with my won putting. So if I could practice with just my one hand I would actually pick my weaker hand and just to hit a few putts just with my left hand and feel how my left hand can learn to guide the putter all on its own. That way it builds a little bit of strength, builds a bit of muscle memory, better coordination, and therefore it means I’m going to stop overriding it with my right hand too much.
Then when I put my hands back on together my left hand, my weaker hand feels like it can still play an active part in the stroke, it’s not just there to be a passenger, it’s there to provide some stability and some control. So practicing putting with just your weaker hand is quite a good use a five or 10 minutes on the putting green before you go out and play, or even just in the carpet at home. Practice with your weaker hand, make more of unit out of both hands.
