Should I Go For High Percentage Golf Shots? (Video) - by Peter Finch

Should I go for low percentage golf shots? Now if you’ve played golf for a number years you will have found yourself in situations where you need to pull off a fantastic shot to actually get the ball near a pin or to get it on the fairway from a particularly difficult tee shot. Now in these situations where you’re facing these low percentage shots you need to turn on your course management and you need to take a number of different things into account. Mainly your position in the match and have you played this particular type of shot before. If you are in a match that you’re one down with one hole to play and you face a thirty yard cut round the tree to a very tight pin then by all means have a go. There is no point in holding back in that situation because the likely hood is you will lose the match. So in that situation feel free to have a go for the shot. If are three or with three holes to play and you face a fifty yard hook around trees, over water, a bunker and a mine field then it’s not the best idea to go for that shot it’s best playing safe and wait for your opponent to make the mistake.

Now the second thing you need to take into consideration is have you played the shot before. If you are faced with a very high flop shot off a tight lie over a bunker and you’ve not played that shot before and you’re not confident with that shot, taking it on in that situation could be a mistake. Because it would increase the chances of a bad shot and decrease the chance of playing a successful shot if you haven’t practiced it before. And that’s the key and that’s the big mistake many people make and that’s not the trap to fall into. If you’re faced with the shot you’ve not played it successfully before chose the safer option; make a note of the shot that you wanted to play and practice it after the round. If you practice it after the round the next time you're faced with that situation you will be able to call on those good memories and say okay I can play this shot lets go for it. In general if the match is on the line, if you need to make the score go for the low percentage shots but if you want to play safe and you want to kind of engage good course management pick the safer option take your medicine and get out of that hole with a good score. So use those tips, apply that to your game, and hopefully we can make those low percentage shots higher if you go away and practice them, but also keep your scores reasonable just by using good course management and playing safe when you need to.
