How To Stop Decelerating With Your Golf Irons (Video) - by PGA Instructor Peter Finch

One problem which plagues many amateur golfers is not committing and not accelerating through iron shots. You see so often on the course and at the driving range those players come through, there is no commitment and there is a deceleration as they swing through the ball. Now what we’re going to look at is how you can commit, why this happens and how it will help you improve your game.

Deceleration through iron shots is par technical and it is par mental. There is no real need as you are swinging down into the ball to slow down. You should be speeding up and accelerating down towards the target. Now the reasons that this would be happening is, there is something within your swing which is not allowing you to move through with the amount of pace, but more likely as you're moving through the ball there is something within your mind, which is not allowing you to commit to the shot. What we have to do with you and your game is find out which one it is. Is it something technical which isn't allowing you to commit, or is it purely a mental issue where you're not able to swing down and through and strike the iron just consistently as you should do. What a deceleration through impact really looks like. It normally happens with a very fast backswing and then coming down through the ball the swing really slows down. So it's a quick backswing and then as you come through is that real deceleration, longer resulting in a fat or a thin shot, rather than accelerating through and striking the ball cleanly, it will appear to some people to be that real slow down moving into the ball. So hopefully in this video series we can really analyze why this might be happening, and hope they give you some fixes to try and cure yourself if it is.
