How tightly should I hit the golf club through my golf swing? Well one of the most important things if you’re playing well is to have a nice relaxed grip so that your muscles are lose and you can make a really good golf swing and if you’re holding the club too tightly what will happen is as you hold the club too tightly the muscles in your arms will start to work and as your muscles work, they actually contract and get shorter. As your muscles are getting shorter you’ve already set the distance between your shoulder and the club head and as you grip tight and your muscles shorten you effectively you are lifting the club head up away fro the ground and that’s going to encourage you to have either a complete air shot or just to hit the top of the golf ball.

So the correct pressure to have in your hands when you’re holding your golf club will be say 40% of how tightly you could hold. So if you squeeze the club as tightly as you can, and we call that 100% or say a 10, now just half it down to five and that’s a good pressure to hold up but if you cant just loosen it off one more number down to four and that’s the correct pressure to have all the way through the golf swing. Not just at the address position here and then squeezing tight as you swing back, maintain that fall all the way through the swing. If you struggle with your grip pressure a really good drill I’d advice you to do once you’ve set up to the golf ball, would be to literally squeeze as tight as you can, get that quick pressure up to 10 and then half it and then swing from that position. That will get you hitting shots with a nice relaxed grip and you should find that your strike improves, the distance you achieve improves and your accuracy improves as well.
