What Causes My Golf Drives To Fly Too Low (Video) - by Peter Finch

Why does my golf drives fly too low? If you are hitting the driver too low off the tee, there are number of different factors which could be to blame. The first place to check is the amount of loft which is on your driver. If you’re using a driver with too little loft, so say under nine and a half degrees, or even under 12 degrees for some people, the ball will fly too low and it won’t reach its maximum amount of potential height. So if it is going too low, first of all check the amount of loft which is on your club. Secondly, check the shaft flex. If the shaft tends to be too stiff, it won’t add enough for help, and it won’t give you enough help to actually lift the ball up into the air. Now, those two factors need to be brought in, get yourself a custom-fit session which will fit a driver to your ability. Now, if you are hitting it too low, it could also be the way you’re setting up the ball on the tee.

You need that ball to be pretty much half way above the top edge of the club, so the equator of the ball sits right on the top edge. This is going to enable you to sweep the ball away. If that ball is, tied down a little bit too low, it could cause you to strike it down and send the ball away with a very low trajectory. The other reason it could be coming very, very low off the club is you hit it off the bottom edge. If you’re hitting off the bottom edge of the club below the sweet spot, the ball is going to also fly very, very low. Lastly, the last thing that could be causing it to go low is if you’re striking down on the ball. If you strike down on the ball and don’t go underneath, which will be a sky shot, if you strike down on the ball and catch it cleanly with those hands slightly ahead, you’re going to deloft the club and the ball is going to fly very, very low. So we need to make sure when we’re hitting a driver, that the ball is just inside the left heel. Our swing center and our head behind the shot as we hit it, and we’re just trying to sweep the ball very, very cleanly off the top of the tee. If you can get those combinations and you can get those factors working together, you should be able to get a lot more elevation, a lot more loft, and a lot more height onto your golf shots, which should give you the maximum amount of distance as far as height and roll are concerned.
