Why Do Some Golfers Use Very Wide And Fat Grips On My Putters (Video) - by Pete Styles
Why Do Some Golfers Use Very Wide And Fat Grips On My Putters (Video) - by Pete Styles

Quite a thing over the last few years starting on the PJ tour now filtering down to club level and then to all the pro shops these really big fat wide putting grips is what I call the table leg. It feels like you’re holding onto a table leg when you take one of these. Interestingly they’re never quite as heavy as they look. They’re really cumbersome and really adding a lot of weight to the putter, but they’re all hollow like a honey comb inside. So they’re actually quite light to hold onto and really nice actually for someone that’s got a thin grips on the normal clubs and quite flicky with their hands. You pick one of these, “Wow that feels nice and chunky, nice and solid, I can really get a hold of that.” Now the intention that you squeeze it particularly tight or any harder, but the feeling of the bigger grip in your fingers should rely on the fact your hands now don’t need to quite do so much work. And that’s where people have found these beneficial when they’re putting. As we talk a lot about how using your hands too much when you’re putting can cause you lots of problems with under hitting, over hitting, changing direction the distance of putts, so having a much bigger grip here which naturally takes out a little bit of that wrist hinge, can feel quite comfortable.

Some people don’t like them so we pick them up say that’s not for me, that doesn’t feel comfortable feels to walk with, maybe because they’re not used to it. But actually if you take a good grip with one of these and make a few strokes you should feel that your hands now don’t need to have so much influence, don’t need to hit and flick and scoop quite so much. So the bigger, the fatter the putting grips the grip is going to be very similar. We don’t actually need to change the way we hold the club a lot much. You could still have your left below right grip if you wanted, you could still have your pen holder or your claw grip, that’s not going to cause a problem. But it’s just the feature of having a much bigger grip, you don’t need to grip it quite so tightly, you don’t need to involve your hand action too much into it, and it will be well worth trying. So next time you’re in the pro shop and there’s a few putters lying around, grab one of these really big fat chunky grips, have a little putt with what I would call the table leg grip, and see how it feels, and see how it can improve your game.
