Putting Ball Position, Where Should Golf Ball Be Placed During Putting Stroke (Video) - Lesson by PGA Pro Pete Styles

Now coaches like myself we make big deal about ball position with all of the rest of the clubs in your bag drivable position, wedge ball positing. But we often forget about putting ball position when we are putting. So it’s quite important we understand where the ball should be placed and why. Now I’m just going to grab this cane just to help see the cameras see where my ball position is placed in relation to my feet.

What I would suggest is you position the ball like you would do for about a six iron golf club now as long as you got your six iron in the right place lets just double check that. We’d normally play pitching wedge directly in the centre of the feet and then move it about half an inch forward for each of the club so nine, eight, seven, six two inches ahead of centre so there is my ball position for six two inches ahead of centre and that’s also a great ball position to have for your putting stroke. So as I set up here notice the ball and there fore the orange cane there are not in the middle of my feet like a lot of club golfers have they are slightly of set to the front side, so left side for the right handed golfer and reverse that for the left handed. So it’s ahead of centre. That encourages me to hit my putt with a slightly upwards well ascending stroke I really don’t want to hit down on the putt and deal of the putter I want to be able sweep that ball away. Try to have a putting ball position that is ever so slightly ahead of centre like about a six iron ball position. Now as I go ahead and make my stroke you can see my hand sit to the left side of centre so I’m not scooping back I’m not too far ahead. Just left side of centre pretty much on top of the golf ball now as I make my stroke and I’m hitting on a slightly upwards arching path sweeping that ball away, you are going to get some nice over spin and rolling it down towards the hole. So next time you are considering where you should position the golf ball think about placing exactly the same position as your six iron for a normal golf shot.
