What is a wide takeaway and how can it help improve my golf? Now a wide takeaway and a wide backswing is very simply the ability to get the club head as far away from the body as you can during the back swing. Now the widest golf swing possible is one where you take the club and you move it into this position here, all the way away from the body and then at the top of the swing all the way into this position. However, that might be the widest golf swing you can produce but it will also be very, very inconsistent. So you need to try and keep the body in the posture in a nice solid position and also keep the back swing connected.
Now the way to do that, is to get yourself setup, keep the arms and the shoulders all connected in this triangle shape which you can see from this front view, take it away, push the club away from the body in a nice wide positing keeping the left arm nice and extended, allow the right arm to fold into the body and keep the left arm nice and straight at the top of the swing. Now the advantage of having a very wide back swing is it’s able to generate a lot of more power but also, a lot of more consistency as well. You can actually generate quite a lot of power by letting the left arm bend at the top of the swing because as that straightens out, it will add some club head speed.
However if you can keep the left arm straight at the top of the swing, it will be able to remain straight at the point of impact. So what we want to do, is get into that posture keeping this triangle exactly the same, move it away on a wide low arc away from the ball, straight left arm at the top and then just try and kind of swing down into the ball in a nice smooth motion. The wider that you can get that club moving away from the body while staying connected the more potential energy and the more potential power you’ll be able to produce.
So give that a go all throughout the back from the irons to the driver and hopefully you’ll see a little bit of power and a little bit consistency.
