I don’t know if the camera picks that ball up, but that is quite an impressive looking shot there, if I do say so myself. Beautiful high, really straight and it actually wasn't a brilliant lie. And that’s using my five hybrid club here. Now we’re starting to see a lot of golfers actually have the hybrid clubs starting to make their way into the bags now. Over the last few years most people have gotten one, two hybrids in their sets. And a lot of golfers when they start playing the game and now looking into the people’s bags and saying, “Well what are those clubs and why should I get them?” And then they get them in their bag and then they’re bringing them into a lesson with me, and they say, “I still don’t know what that’s for and how I'm meant to use it.” So we’ve got hybrids in people’s bags. Not using them in enough situations, or if they are using them, they’re using them for one specific type of situation and actually probably missing out on the versatility that these hybrid clubs can give you. Initially a hybrid club was designed with a low center of gravity and a far back moment of inertia so the — sorry the weight is far back, it portrays a high moments of inertia which stops the club twisting. So the weight is low and deep, that gets underneath the ball, pops the ball up in the air, and the club head doesn’t twist much. So it gives accurate long high golf shots.
Now the purpose for this initially was for use almost as rescue clubs, to be used out of the long grass, out of the semi rough, to dig the ball back into play. But we are now starting to see golfers use them in a myriad of other different situations, a lot of golfers like to use is on longer par-3s. So long par-3, 181, 190 might have previously been a four, five or even a 3 iron. But that sort of shot when a 3 iron lands on the green it’s not really going to stop very quickly for most club golfs. It’s going to land and shoot off the back of the green. So a higher launching with the weight lower down, hybrid golf club gives a higher flight to the ball with more back spin when the ball lands on the green, it’s going to settle a little bit quicker, it’s not going to land and shoot over the back. So a nice hybrid club useful on par-3s, useful from the fairway as well, second shots, third shots into par fives. We’ve talked about the virtues also from hitting them out on the semi rough, the weight low and deep gets under the ball, flies it up in the air.
But one other area that I think a lot of people miss out on is actually chipping with the golf ball or pitching with the golf ball from around the side of the green. The way the club is designed it almost looks to a lot of people like a putter that’s just got a bit of loft on it. So if we take a nice set up and we just putt backwards and forward with the club we can chip it nicely from the side of the greens, now you might feel a bit strange chipping in, you might feel your mates are going to look at you and laugh at you and particularly if you duff it. So practice with it, get comfortable with it before you start playing with it on the golf course, but just have a little think of how many times you could use these versatile hybrid golf club to save you shots on the golf course. Get the hybrids out of the bag, get them in your hands, learn to use them and you’ll save some shots.
