One of the great characters of the game at the turn of the 20th century, was Scottish professional Tommy Armour nicknamed the Silver Scott, he had a very colorful life, a very difficult life in many respects, but overcame many issues to become a fantastic player and win three golf major titles; only really overshadowed because he played at the same time as the great Bobby Jones. Now what Tommy Armour had was a quite unique action in many, many respects when compared to some of the top modern professionals. In the backswing, Tommy Armour’s arms used to be pretty much glued to his side, and never really left. So his arms just stayed very, very close to the body. Now what if you do that and if you swing like that, you’re not able to generate a massive amount of power, unless you add in lots of wrist hinge, and that’s what Tommy Armour managed to do.

He kept the arms very close, turned away and hinged the wrists very, very aggressively. Now in many respects, this isn’t a very technically proficient position to be in but what it does allow you to do is keep the arms close and keep them connected, and deliver the club into impact with the hand slightly ahead enabling a descending angle of attack on to the ball. And that was one of the reasons why he was able to win so many tournaments, was he managed to get into a very, very consistent impact. Now this won’t improve distance, but it could improve strike and it could improve control. So if you’re looking for those two aspects to improve upon within your swing, keep the arms close add in quite a lot of wrist hinge, and it will allow you to repeat a very similar impact position, every single time. So if you’re looking for help with that aspect of your game, check out Tommy Armour’s swing and check out his history a very, very interesting guy.
