Thorbjorn Olesen is a 25 year old Danish golfer who in 2013 absolutely decimated the Challenge Tour to step up to the European Tour where his consistent form has continued. And he is definitely one of the most exciting players currently playing on the European Tour, who is ready to step up to the big time. Now his swing is very, very technically sound, and he also has this trait which is very common with modern golfers. From the top of the golf swing, rather than lifting the right heel and powering the right side, he actually rolls onto the in step of the right foot. What was common with many of the older generation players is to swing through, get the weight transferred and it goes to the foot, then get up early on to the right toe, enabling the hips to actually turn round before striking through. What Thorbjorn does as well as a lot of all the other modern players is get the right foot rolling onto the in step during the downswing. Now that movement allows the weight to transfer on to the left side, but it keeps the hips in a more back position, rather than getting them to moving forwards towards the ball which could throw out the swing play. So from the top of the swing, it’s a roll into the in step, the hips stay back, and the club travels down and through. It’s an interesting movement and it’s a slightly different movement than many of the older generation players, but if it’s done correctly, it can help keep the hips back and out of the way and lead to more consistent shots. So to replicate this very simply from the top of the swing, roll onto the in step and let that weight transfer forward. It has many, many benefits, and if you’re strong enough and fit enough to make the movement work like Thorbjorn does, it does lead to very consistent shots.
